NYLT

The Midnight Sun Council is proud to offer its 4th National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT).  Scouts 13 years of age and that have achieved 1st Class Scout rank and if they have been recommended by a Scoutmaster or Varsity Troop Leader will have the opportunity to participate in this unique leadership program.

NYLT is set up to represent a month in the life of a typical Scout troop, including mirroring the troop structure by assigning incoming participants to patrols.  The first three full days of the course represent the first three weeks of a troop calendar, complete with patrol leaders’ council meetings, troop meetings, patrol meetings, and planning for a big troop event.  Participants use the full range of BSA resources for planning and conducting meetings that are interesting, lively, and relevant; skills they can incorporate with great effect when they return to their home troops.  Patrol members put their preparations to the test with an NYLT Outpost Camp, symbolizing the big event that culminates a normal troop’s monthly program.

During an NYLT course patrol members will find challenges presented that heighten the team development process, enabling them to use their potential and grow as team as well as individuals.  Along the way they also enjoy the Scouting fellowship and fun that are key components of the patrol method.

NYLT participants discover that leading themselves and leading others requires a vision; a picture of future success.  Each patrol will develop a team vision for the course, and each individual will prepare his own vision.  Through presentations and positive experiences in goal setting, planning, and problem solving, participants learn how to set a clear course toward realizing their team and individual visions.

Every NYLT course operates according to the principles of the Scout Oath and Law.  The NYLT program provides troops with outstanding youth leaders and gives those Scouts the tools and leadership ideals that will serve them well in whatever they do.

We would like to see each unit send at least two youth.  This will help strengthen your troop leadership which in turn will help your troop grow.  With strong youth leaders you have stronger and better quality unit programs, which make the adult roles easier.

The fee for this valuable training is $275.00.  We would encourage the troop to help the youth pay for this training.  There is a nonrefundable deposit of $75 due upon sign up at the Earl and Pat Cook Council Service Center.  The first half fee of $100 is due March 1, 2012, and the final fee of $100 is due May 1, 2012.

If you have any questions or would like a troop presentation, please contact the Earl and Pat Cook Council Service Center at 452-1976.
